Red Dead Online to allow players to remake their characters

Red Dead Online is a very good game mode with one major problem: Its character creator is not great. I spent most of my time with it squinting apprehensively at my avatar’s face as I cranked bars to each extreme, trying to find a difference. After I rolled out of my first character and watched her in a cutscene next to Rockstar-designed NPC Jessica LeClerk, I despaired at the state of her waxy skin, dead eyes, and weird jaw. I had to start the entire campaign over, and my new character still has weird cheekbones that jut out at certain angles and look unnatural.

Luckily, Rockstar is introducing character re-customization that won’t require a restart of Red Dead Online. In a post on its official site, Rockstar shared some of the things that will be coming in the next update.

We’d like to thank all of our loyal players for continuing to send us their feedback via the official Red Dead Online Feedback page and encourage you to please keep it coming. We’ve been working on implementing some of the top-requested features for the next major Red Dead Online update – including the ability to reset your character’s appearance without altering your progress, automatically retaining Playing Style preferences (Defensive/Offensive) when transitioning to and from Free Roam and much, much more.

While the ability to retain playing styles is good and fine, I’m by far the most hyped for the ability to re-customize our character. A major part of Red Dead Online’s success is the fact that our avatars feel like they fit in the world; they’re more than just a vehicle taking us through new game modes. We make moral decisions, stop and help random citizens (or ignore them), and occasionally get into bare-knuckle brawls in bars.

The more I look at the tiny flaws that make up my character’s face, the more they bother me and remove me from the world. I also find myself warning friends who want to start Red Dead Online that they should take their time with character customization and be ready to reset. Now, that weight is lifted.

Another update this summer will give players the ability to choose roles and level up bounty hunting, trading, or collecting. Red Dead Online’s May patch further fleshed out the world, adding random events and poker.
