A new Starship Troopers
game is arriving on PC in 2020. It’ll drop you right into the 1997 film’s universe just as the human colony is being overrun by Arachnids. From there, you’ll have to deploy complex tactics as you take the fight into bug territory with elite soldiers.
The game comes from publishers Slitherine and Sony Pictures, who announced that Starship Troopers – Terran Command is being made by war game studio The Aristocrats. It will be available for PC via Steam in 2020.
Terran Command is described as a blend of “classic real-time mechanics, tower defense and tactical deployment of units.” Most of all, it’s meant to capture the danger and uncertainty that pervades the film as the troops battle the nasty bugs on their own planet.
“When creating this game, we aimed to capture the essence of the original movie and its universe,” said Iain McNeil, development director at Slitherine. “This is not only achieved by creating a coherent set of units and scenarios, but also by mimicking the language, visual elements, dialogues and the little details that made the film such an iconic, cult feature.”
You’ll be able to solve each problem you face with a range of solutions due to the game’s complex set of mechanics, so long as you can keep up with its fast pace. Getting control of choke points, building defences, and making tactical use of elevation is said to be vital.
Hopefully it all amounts to a better game than the Starship Troopers FPS that came out in 2005 for PC, PS2, and Xbox. It was brought down by “annoying combat mechanics and shallow gameplay loops.”
The last we heard about anything about the sci-fi series was the CG animated Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars which came out back in 2017. It was reported before that came out that a Starship Troopers reboot that wouldn’t be a remake was in development at Sony.
